Mission
Vision
SUMS takes an integrated approach to educating students in the faculty of nursing. We combine a rigorous education in the core areas of study required in nursing with public health, medicine and social welfare issues in cooperation with the faculty of medicine to support students’ personal growth and develop their competencies in nursing care.
Values
We live in an increasingly diverse society and need to be able to respond appropriately and sensitively to this diversity by nurturing exceptional health care professionals in the fields of medicine, nursing, public health, social welfare and international humanitarian aid. We develop and maintain essential clinical program to provide basic nursing care that can meet the needs of our community and that of the global society.
Students acquire nursing expertise and key skills for caring and decision-making, and become aware of ethics to develop general competencies for practicing the patient care. We offer the opportunities to obtain a sufficient level of nursing knowledge to develop nursing practice.
- Expand the personality to gain a deeper insight and understanding of human nature to protect and promote the autonomy of patients: respect their beliefs, personal experience and the rights for decision-making.
- Develop interpersonal skills to identify and target patients’ genuine needs and to provide outstanding care.

Admission Policy
In accordance with the University’s philosophy, our School strives to train nursing specialists who are highly educated and have an ethical sense. Our goal is that our graduates contribute to the local community as nurses, public health nurses, or midwives, and that they play active roles as nursing experts, leaders, educators, or researchers. With this purpose in mind, we seek individuals who have the basic skills to acquire the knowledge, abilities, and skills required to serve as nursing professionals, and who will learn medicine in a passionate and dedicated manner. Specifically, we seek individuals as indicated below.

Student Selection
To select individuals in accordance with the characteristics listed above, we conduct the General Admission Exam, the Recommendation-based Admission Exam, and the Transfer Admission Exam of the 3rd year.
1. General Admission Exam (First Term)
Student selection will be made based on the combined results of the General Admission Exam which includes the following: the Common Test for University Admissions, the Individual Academic Performance Test, the interview, and the achievement report from their high school. The Common Test for University Admissions assesses fundamental academic ability while the individual Academic Performance test (short essay) evaluates the students’ ability to understand the subject matter by logically evaluating assumptions and conclusions using their knowledge, and analytical and expressive skills. Finally, the interview and the achievement report assess students' ability regarding logical thinking, and working in harmony and communicating with others.
2. Recommendation-based Admission Exam
Student selection will be made based on the combined results of the recommendation letter from the principal of their high school, the achievement report from high school, the application statement, the Common Test for University Admissions, the essay , and the interview . In addition to assessing the students' academic abilities using the results of the Common Test for University Admissions, their grades, performance in extracurricular activities and individual achievements during high school, and the magnitude and clarity of motivation for admission will be assessed using the submitted documents (e.g., the application statement and the interview.
3. Transfer Admission Exam of the 3rd year
Student selection will be made based on the combined results of submitted application documents, the Individual Academic Performance Test, and the interview . The degree of academic achievement will be assessed through the Individual Academic performance tests on specialized subjects and foreign language ability (English), while the interview will be used to evaluate the students’ ability to work in harmony with others, their creativity, and other qualities. Academic ability and aptitude will be evaluated in a comprehensive manner.
Curriculum Policy
The School of Nursing Science develops and implements its curriculum to achieve the following goals:
- To help students understand human beings as individuals and as biological systems within the context of natural environments and social systems. To do so, we integrate liberal arts subjects and fundamental nursing-related subjects.
- To foster students' knowledge, ethical sense, and practical nursing skills that are required for them to serve as medical specialists, collaborating with the University Hospital, through specialized subjects that integrate theories and practice.
- To enhance students' interest in the changes in health care, medical, and welfare environments, both domestically and internationally; to educate them about health-related challenges from a global perspective; and to help them understand international medical support activities and measures.
- To teach subjects that enhance the communication skills that students need in order to provide comprehensive health care, medicine, and welfare services, and to work in harmony with practitioners of other occupations. Joint lectures with Medical School students are also provided to accomplish this aim.
- To educate students on how to conduct nursing research and write papers based on the insights that they obtain through clinical observations. This is done by teaching subjects related to nursing research methodologies and promoting students' participation in academic conferences and study sessions.
- To educate students on basic diagnostic skills related to public health activities for local community residents, and basic skills required to resolve residents' health-related issues.
- To educate students on the roles and responsibilities of midwives in the light of maternal and infant health, and teach them the necessary skills to conduct midwifery diagnosis and labor.
Diploma Policy
To graduate from the School, students shall meet the following requirements:
- Acquire a rich sense of humanity and expertise that is underpinned by broad knowledge, ethical sense, and capabilities. Be able to care for those who have diseases or disabilities and support people who live in good health. In addition, students should be able to consider health-related issues from an international perspective.
- Have sufficient communication skills and ability to work cooperatively with others, establish good relationships with patients and medical staff, and collaborate with individuals of different occupations.
- Have the grounding that is necessary to serve as an expert researcher, including the abilities and attitudes necessary to identify and resolve research-related challenges in a self-motivated manner.
- Understand the social significance of public health nurses and the value of their activities, and to have the ability to independently provide public health nursing services when necessary, with the aim of ensuring people's rights to healthy living.
- Have the ability required to serve as a midwife in perinatal care, including making diagnoses and managing labor. In addition, knowing how to support women by understanding their health as life-span development.
